“The Whale”

August 14, 2014

Have you ever named an inanimate object? (Your car? Your laptop? The volleyball that kept you company while you were stranded in the ocean?) Share the story of at least one object with which you’re on a first-name basis.

It was big, it was blue, it was heavy, and it was clumsy. It was a hassle to park. It was also something of a gas guzzler. I started calling it mock affectionately “the whale”. It was my mom’s car. She bought it used in the 1990’s. It was one of those lumbering old cars from the late ’70’s or early ’80’s, but it was what she could afford. It was something to watch my mom driving it. She’s a short  4’10”, you could barely see the top of her head peering over the steering wheel. She had to run the seat forward to the first notch to reach the steering pedals and put a small pillow behind her back to sit up straight enough to see. “The whale” served us well, lumbering up hills, chugging around curves , and plowing through snow until the day it finally and tragically died sometime in the 2000’s.
