Hobbits, And Fuzzies, And Treecats, Oh My!

July 16, 2014

Go down the rabbit hole with Alice; play quidditch with Harry Potter; float down the river with Huck Finn … If you could choose three fictional events or adventures to experience yourself, what would they be?

This prompt required a considerable bit of pondering. Which three adventures would I want to experience the most? There are so many possibilities!

Should I stick to a single genre? Say Science fiction or Fantasy? What about Historical novels or Paranormal Romances? There are so many different characters whose adventures I would love to visit.

I finally decided to choose on the basis of those alien characters I am the most fascinated by.

I would join the Hobbits Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee on their journey through Middle Earth. I have been enraptured by the Hobbits and the Elves ever since I first read the book. I want to see the Shire, talk to Gandalf, and witness the triumph of Good over Evil.

  • The Lord Of The Rings J. R. R. Tolkien

Zarathustra was a Class-III uninhabited planet, and the chartered Zarathustra Company owned it lock, stock and barrel. They developed it, exploited it and reaped huge profits without any interference from the Colonial Government.
But then, out of nowhere, came Jack Holloway-with a family of Fuzzies and a great deal of evidence that they were more than just cute animals.
If the Fuzzies were a race of intelligent beings, then then Zarathustra would automatically become a Class-IV inhabited planet, and the Company’s charter and privileges would be over.
The Chartered Zarathustra Company wasn’t going to allow that to happen …

I would join Jack Holloway and Little Fuzzy on Zarathustra for the trial on the Fuzzies sapience (who says you have to talk and make fire to be considered sapient?) and the discovery of their history. I feel for the plight of these little people, to be so small in such a world full of big dangers!

  • Fuzzies And Other People H. Beam Piper
  • Fuzzy Bones William Tuning
  • Golden Dreams Ardath Mayhar

I would explore the Honorverse of Honor Harrington with Honor and her Sphinxian treeecat Nimitz. I am enthralled by their relationship. The idea of an empathic species capable of bonding with certain humans interests me. The worlds of Sphinx, Gryphon, and Manticore among others are brought to vibrant life and filled with details by the author(s). I want to explore every one of them.
