Grace On Four Feet

September 5, 2013

Pounce (Photo credit: Daniel Imfeld)

She moved with flowing gracestalking through the jungle of the meadow

each padded paw carefully laid down

ears cocked, she crouched

tail lashing slowly

she gathered herself, lept

landing, capture

“Squeak!” of dying mouse

Calico strutted proudly

prey dangling from mouth

kitten’s supper secured.

I imagine this is how my cat succeeds in mousing all of the time. Only she doesn’t bring it to a kitten. She brings them still alive into my bed in the middle of the night. I released half a dozen of them outside last winter in the middle of cold nights!

Be glad it’s only mice. Callie used to bring me live chipmonks! They have sharp teeth!
